which would be quicker to learn? chen 36 taichi and yang 24 taichi or the 5 heian kata?
by learn i dont mean to master but to memorise in order to practise.
I was going to say which would be easier but easy is a relative word.
I havbe read that you can learn yang 24 in about 4 months.
add tekki sdhodan and bassai dai to the kata list as I have read knowing these 2 and the 5 heian will get a practitioner to black-belt in shotokan.
and please bear in mind being able to learn and do the moves does NOT constitute mastery.
i wasnt saying the kata alone would get you to black belt. rather that you cant get there without knowing them. and according to a couple of shotokan sites and books knowing these kata is a requirement for black-belt.
i can have the movements of any kata down in the a few hours,
when i was in my late teens and 20′s i only had to see the kata 2 of 3 times an would have the movements memorized, and be able to do it on my own.
it all depends on the person, and the instructor. most of the heian and yang 24 movement is almost the same number of movements.
just know kata movements will not get you a black belt in shotokan, unless its a mcdojo.
there is a lot more to being a black belt then just kata, and in my dojo there are 10 kata plus all the other requirements i have before my student reach black belt.
